What is your role as a health care team member?

I am a registered nurse on inpatient Mental Health Unit. My role is to promoting mental health through the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of human responses to mental health problems and psychiatric disorders.By forming a trusting relationship that provides comfort, safety, and non-judgmental acceptance of patients, to help my patients improve their health status. It calls for self-awareness and the use of effective communication techniques. Psychiatric-mental health nursing, a core mental health profession, employs a purposeful use of self as its art and a wide range of nursing, psychosocial and neurobiological theories and research evidence as it science.

2. How do you define professionalism and how does professional responsibility influence your work?

I can define Professionalism as means of conducting oneself with responsibility, integrity, accountability, and excellence. It means communicating effectively and appropriately and always finding a way to be productive. It influences my work by motivating my colleagues and organization by maintaining frequent self-assessment, seek feedback on my performance as a leader so that I can self-correct if necessary.

3. Do you consider leaders in your organization stewards of health care? Why or Why not?

Yes, I consider to be a leader in my organization of health care in the future. I will like to be a servant-leaders that consider other first. Servant-leadership is a service-oriented approach that focuses on valuing and developing people and offers a participatory and collaborative framework within which to build creative and productive research communities. Servant leaders are strong and resilient leaders sustained by a passion to support the personal growth and development of constituents, and facilitate the achievement of communal goals and aspirations. Ten characteristics are associated with servant leaders (see Table 1) (Spears, 2004), who use this blend of qualities to co-create compassionate, flexible, supportive, inclusive and encouraging environments, which are characterized by teamwork, nurturance and valuing of constituents.

4. Is it important to you that leaders exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and influence when working with colleagues? Why or why not?

Yes, it is important. Effective leaders are required to use problem-solving processes, maintain group effectiveness and develop group identification. For leaders to exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and influence they should also be dynamic, passionate, should be able to motivate or influence other people, be solution-focused and seek to inspire others. An they should characteristicsto win respect and trust of other team member.

Leaders must apply these characteristics to their work in order to win the respect and trust of team members and lead the development of clinical practice. By demonstrating an effective leadership style, these nurses will be in a powerful position to influence the successful development of other staff, ensuring that professional standards are maintained and enabling the growth of competent practitioners. In a study by Bondas (2006), leaders who were described as driving forces were admired. They were regarded as a source for inspiration and role models for future nurse leaders.
