Rationale

uCKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are significant public health problems in the United States and a major source of suffering and poor quality of life for those afflicted uThey are responsible for premature death and exact a high economic price from both the private and public sectors uCKD and ESRD are very costly to treat. Nearly 25% of the Medicare budget is used to treat people with CKD and ESRD (HealthyPeople.gov, 2018). uResources uProfessional resources include up to date education and evidence based research. Reliable resources include:   uhttps://www.uptodate.com/home uhttps://www.andeal.org/topic.cfm?menu=5303&cat=4042 u uRelation and Importance:
uMaintaining optimum health and quality of life is important for individuals of all ages.  uUnderstanding that chronic kidney disease is not only debilitating, but time consuming is important for the individual and family. u Dialysis is time consuming. Multiple hours a day for 3 days a week doesn’t have to be the course of the individuals life. This also puts a strain on family life and roles. When an individual becomes ill with disease, family roles and dynamics change.  uIndividuals diagnosed with CKD need to maintain proper and appropriate diet and avoid strenuous activities.   u uRelation and Importance (Contd.): uThe number of patients starting renal replacement therapy (RRT) is increasing.   uImprovements in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) across communities to alter this trend are a public health priority. With this increasing number health care cost also increases within our community and nation.  u In total, stage 2–stage 4 CKD costs Medicare FFS about $49 billion each year! See attached PDF for more staggering cost and effects on the community.
